The Final Push Before the Primary!

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow will be a very important day for us, and for our friends and neighbors in South County.

I have always fought to provide results for the community I grew up in, and am proud to represent. Over the years I have listened to your concerns, and worked hard to ensure that our home never lost it's voice within the State House.

I am writing to ask for your help - whether you can call your friends, knock on doors or help out around our headquarters. These two remaining days will be crucial, as we look to continue our momentum and earn a primary victory.

You can find us canvassing all around our district today, or you can always stop into our headquarters at Pier Marketplace (792-1033) if you wish to help.

I humbly ask for your vote on Tuesday, September 14th, and I thank you for your continued support!

Please Note - Very Important Voting Change for This Tuesday

I want to let you know of an important change occurring in our town's voting process. There will now only be one polling center available in Narragansett on primary day, September 14th. In the past there have been a number of polling centers established to make voting more convenient and accessible to the public. However, the Narragansett Community Center will be the only center open for the primary next week.

I hope this unexpected inconvenience will not interfere with your busy schedules, and that you will still be able to cast your vote in this very important primary election. I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday, September 14th, and I thank you for your continued support!

From the desk of Ken Plysemmer

I hope all is well with you and your family. I am writing to respectfully urge you to support our State Representative, David Caprio, in Primary Election on Tuesday, September 14. David has demonstrated his loyalty to the residents of South County, and continues to do a great job representing us at the State House.

I first met David after the passing of our son, Kristian, in 2002. They were friends, and I told David that I would be more than willing to support his work as our Representative, and have done so ever since.

On numerous occasions, I have observed David respond compassionately towards others during difficult times. A man of integrity, intelligence and fortitude, David listens to his constituents and works diligently in response to their needs- our needs!

David’s accomplishments in the State Legislature have impacted our lives in very positive ways. His accomplishments include the passage of the Colin Foote Act involving repeat traffic offenders, increasing penalties for drunk driving, securing funding for the renovation of Galilee, and continuous support of our elderly. As an educator, I have appreciated his support for education funding and especially his efforts to keep the Wakefield Elementary School open for our children.

I’m asking you to join me in re-electing Representative David Caprio, on Primary Day, Tuesday September 14th. In this primary, every vote will count. David has the experience, courage, maturity and dignity that his position demands.

Please help ensure that David can continue being a passionate voice for our issues and concerns at the State House. He has made a difference and will continue to make a difference.

Sincerely,
Ken Plysemmer

Bob McQueeney supports David Caprio

I am writing to urge you to vote for our State Representative, David Caprio this Tuesday, September 14th.

As a summer vacation and winter college community, we are faced with the constant problem of minors and alcohol. We also have suffered unspeakable losses from drunk and irresponsible drivers on our roads. I am a retired State Trooper, who has seen first hand the horrific tragedies that result from these drivers. This year, new laws were passed at the State House to make our roads safer. I want to thank our State Representative, David Caprio, for taking a leadership role to toughen the laws dealing with these issues.

Representative David Caprio was a sponsor of the "Colin Foote Act" which is a measure to suspend or revoke the license, for up to one year, of any individual convicted of multiple moving violations within an 18-month period. The need for this law arose from the recent tragic death of Colin Foote when he was struck and killed by a driver that previously had 27 traffic offenses yet still had a driver's license! Before this law, the Traffic Tribunal did not have the authority to revoke a driver's license.

Representative David Caprio also sponsored legislation to close a loophole in state law dealing with alcohol and minors. The new law makes it illegal for anyone between the ages of 18 and 21 to provide alcohol to a minor. I was amazed that prior to Rep. Caprio's bill, it was NOT illegal for minors to provide alcohol to another minor!

The General Assembly also passed a bill making it a felony for any person to drive under the influence when his or her license is suspended, revoked or canceled as a result of operating under the influence.

These three bills came through the House Judiciary Committee, of which David Caprio is the chairman. His leadership shepherded these bills through the committee and to passage.

Representative David Caprio is the leader we need in the State House. Please join me in voting for David Caprio on Tuesday so he can continue to effectively represent us.

Respectfully yours,
Bob McQueeney
Captain/Ret. RI State Police

A Letter of Support from Rep. Donald Lally

I have had the pleasure of working with David Caprio for the last ten years. During that time, he has served on the Finance Committee and is now Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He has attained these positions through the confidence that our fellow Representatives have in his abilities, intellect, and leadership.

Most of you know that we in South County are vastly outnumbered by Representatives from the largest cities. It is through achieving leadership positions like David's that we keep a balance of power to see that we in South County are well-served and get our fair share.

David and I work together on many issues - including reforming Rhode Island's hospital licensing fees that were unfair and threatened to close South County Hospital; criminal laws like drunk driving; tougher laws for dangerous and frequent traffic violators; sexual predators; and many laws that give our police the tools they need to keep us safe in our homes and streets. This session we implemented income tax reform that makes us more competitive, improving our state's rating from 48th to 26th nationwide (Providence Journal Bulletin, dated June 20). We are working to move the state forward and much remains to be done!

I urge you to vote for David this Primary Day on Tuesday, September 14th 2010.

Respectfully,
Don

Providence Journal Coverage of David's Campaign in District 34

This week, the Providence Journal had an excellent article detailing the nearly 300 candidates running for R.I General Assembly. Included in the story is a quote from State Representative David Caprio regarding his coordinated and extensive campaign for re-election in District 34.

“The unions made it very clear … that a vote to reform the pension system, a vote to cap the COLAs, would be viewed as a reason for them [to] actively support people who would run against legislators who voted that way,”

“My responsibility is to the taxpayers of my district, and the overall financial health of the state.”

Highlighting David's unwavering focus on the issues throughout the campaign, the Journal article frames the District 34 as one of the most followed races state-wide.

Following up on the article, Representative Caprio also added: "I have been fortunate enough to receive many union endorsements during my time as representative, and I understand the difficult challenges teachers, nurses and other professionals face every day. However, given the state's financial struggles, my focus is to provide a balanced approach to help the cities and towns be able to provide property tax relief."

As interest rises around the September 14th primary, so too does Representative Caprio's confidence in his quickly expanding campaign - "I can't say enough about the incredible outpouring of support I have received from my friends and neighbors. From the words of support I hear walking door-to-door, to the dozens of volunteers who turned out to our campaign headquarters to offer their time, I have seen our community come together like never before."

Narragansett Police Endorse David Caprio

Adding to an already long list of endorsements, the Narragansett Police have pledged to stand behind Representative David Caprio in his campaign for re-election in District 34. Further strengthening David's momentum heading into the September 14th primary, this show of support from the IBPO Local 303 continues an impressive stretch for the Caprio campaign.

Addressing its union members, the Narragansett Police Department had this to say - "David has been, throughout the years, a strong support of your rights."

"I want to thank the dedicated members of the Narragansett Police, not only for their endorsement, but because our wonderful quality of life is maintained and protected by the incredible job these officers do every day."

Sierra Club Endorses Representative David Caprio

One of the most influential grassroots environmental groups in the United States, the Sierra Club has once again endorsed Representative David Caprio.

The Sierra Club believes Representative Caprio has without question proven himself to be a vocal proponent for environmental issues. “While we have a long way to go, we need legislators who will go to bat to secure a better Rhode Island for all of us," said Alberta Seaules of the Rhode Island Sierra Club political team.

As a member of the House Committee on Finance and as the Chair of the House Committee on Judiciary, Representative Caprio has been a champion in expanding clean, affordable transportation choices for Rhode Islanders, reducing pollution and our dependence on foreign oil.

"I am humbled to once again receive the support of the Sierra Club who, alongside the people of South County, continue to support me in bringing critical issues to the forefront so that we can preserve the quality of life we enjoy here," said Representative Caprio.

Representative Caprio urges Rhode Island DEM vacate to eviction notices

Galilee -- State Representative David Caprio has urged the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to suspend the eviction notices recently served upon 28 commercial fishing vessels in Galilee.
“These actions are untimely” said Representative Caprio. “The height of the tourist season, which is also the high earning months for the fishermen. Is not the right time to potentially evict commercial fishing boats.”

Caprio also called on DEM to suspend the evictions. “I urge the DEM to suspend any evictions and come to the table to work with the local fleet to implement a payment plan that is realistic considering the difficult economic times and new regulatory hurdles facing the fishermen. In these tough economic times where people are struggling to pay their mortgage and insurance payments, evicting our commercial fishermen sends the wrong message to all Rhode Islanders.”

“Galilee is an economic engine in Rhode Island. We need to take all measures necessary to support our fleet to continue to be viable and to thrive again.”
Representative Caprio reached out to Director Michael Sullivan of DEM and presented his opinion. “The Director received my call and we had a productive conversation.”

President Clinton to visit Rhode Island

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
On Thursday, July 29th, President Bill Clinton will be joining my brother Frank Caprio for a supporter rally at the Rhode Island Convention Center. I would like to invite you and your family to come, as my guest, to see President Clinton.

This is a pivotal event leading up to this years’ election.  It’s a great way to show support for Frank and also a rare opportunity to see President Clinton in person!  He is known to “work the rope line” after most speeches, so don’t miss your opportunity to possibly shake a President’s hand.

If you are interested in attending this historic celebration, please contact me by phone at: (401) 515-4605, or via E-mail at: david@davidcaprio.com for tickets. You can also join me at Casey’s Bar and Grill in Wakefield on Tuesday & Wednesday (July 27 & 28) from 5 to 7:30 p.m. to pick up your complimentary tickets.

I look forward to seeing you there, and I thank you for your continued support!
